چکیده
Scaled experiments on the nonlinear evolution of the RayleighTaylor (RT) and Richtmyer-Meshkov (RM) instabilities are described under a variety, of conditions that occur in nature. At high Reynolds number, the mixi,ng layer grows self-similarly aiAgt* for a constant acceleration (g), and as a power law t*’ 1 for impulsive accelerations US(t) at low and high Mach numbers. The growth coefficients oi and 8i exponents are measured over a comprehensive range of Atwood numbers A. The RT instability is also investigated with NonNewtonian materials which are independently characterized. A critical wavelength and amplitude for instability is observed associated with the shear modulus and tensile yield of the material. The results are applicable from supernova explosions to geophysical flows subject to these hydrodynamic instabilities. PACS numbers: 47.20.Bp, 47.25.Jn

UWFDM-1172 Experiments on the Richtmyer-Meshkov Instability II: Nonlinear Evolution of a Shocked Membraneless Single-Mode Sinusoidal Interface
An experimental investigation of the shock-induced interfacial instability (RichtmyerMeshkov instability) is undertaken in an effort to study temporal evolution of interfacial perturbations in the nonlinear regime. The experiments are performed in a vertical shock tube with a square cross-section. A membraneless interface is prepared by retracting a sinusoidally shaped metal plate initially sep...
متن کاملRayleigh–Taylor and Richtmyer–Meshkov instabilities of flat and curved interfaces
In this work we discuss a non-trivial effect of the interfacial curvature on the stability of uniformly and suddenly accelerated interfaces, such as liquid rims. The new stability analysis is based on operator and boundary perturbation theories and allows us to treat the Rayleigh–Taylor and Richtmyer–Meshkov instabilities as a single phenomenon and thus to understand the interrelation between t...
متن کاملNonlinear Theory of Laser Imprint, Richtmyer-Meshkov and Rayleigh-Taylor Instabilities
Implosion process in laser fusion can be divided into three phases: start-up, acceleration and stagnation phases and various hydrodynamic instabilities appear in each phase. Analytical models are developed to study nonlinear evolutions of the hydrodynamic instabilities in these phases, and compared with multi-dimensional simulations. We mainly discuss the formation of double spiral structures c...
متن کاملScaling Laws of Nonlinear Rayleigh – Taylor and Richtmyer – Meshkov Instabilities ∗
The nonlinear Rayleigh-Taylor (RT) and Richtmyer-Meshkov (RM) instability are investigated by theoretical models based on singlemode and two-bubble physics at all Atwood numbers (A). A potential-flow treatment of single-mode perturbations shows that the late-time RM single mode velocity decreases as v ∼ λ/t, as well as quantifying a two-bubble overtake interaction (“merger”) analogous to that f...
متن کاملThe effect of a short-wavelength mode on the evolution of a long-wavelength perturbation driven by a strong blast wave
Shock-accelerated material interfaces are potentially unstable to both the Richtmyer–Meshkov and Rayleigh–Taylor (RT) instabilities. Shear that develops along with these instabilities in turn drives the Kelvin–Helmholtz instability. When driven by strong shocks, the evolution and interaction of these instabilities is further complicated by compressibility effects. This paper details a computati...
